RE:

Collect these items at home: torch; lamp; night light; car headlight; box of salt; a bag of coins or Monopoly/play money; a bowl; a prayer. List as many ways these items might be used as they can. To do this you could ask: How would you describe the properties each of these items? Can you come up with as many adjectives as you can to describe these items?  When have you used these items? Record your ideas.

There was once a famous sermon Jesus taught called ‘The Sermon on the Mount’ that mentioned many items like the ones you have looked at.

Look at these verses below from the sermon recorded in Matthew’s gospel.  Write out these verses from the sermon on sheets of paper:

Matthew 5:13: Christians as Salt. Matthew 5:14-15 Christians as light.

Matthew 5: 13 You are like salt for the whole human race. But if salt loses its saltiness, there is no way to make it salty again. It has become worthless, so it is thrown out and people trample on it.

Matthew 5:14 “You are like light for the whole world. A city built on a hill cannot be hid. 15 No one lights a lamp and puts it under a bowl; instead, it is put on the lampstand, where it gives light for everyone in the house. 16 In the same way your light must shine before people, so that they will see the good things you do and praise your Father in heaven

Think about what these verses might mean. Start by underlining what you think are the most important words in the verses. Make links to the properties of light and salt to aid your understanding of the verses. Add ideas in different colours around the verses. Think about how the verse might help Christians to follow Jesus. Add your ideas around the verses. You can use these sentence starters to help you:

‘I think this verse is still important today/ not important.....because...........’

‘Christians living as salt and light today means.....’

‘Jesus was trying to say........................when he said....’
