Curriculum Overview 2022

Spring 1

Welcome back Year 6 after what I hope was a really enjoyable Christmas holidays! I hope that you are also feeling well rested and ready to start again!

A big thank you from myself and Mrs Hulse for the wonderful gifts and cards- it is very kind of you all!

We have lots of topics to look forward to this half term. In science we will be looking at the human body under our concept- Animals, including humans. In History we will be looking at the Ancient Greeks in our topic, Did the Greeks really invent democracy? The novels we will be looking at this term I am really excited to read with you! These will be The Selfish Giant and The Happy Prince. Both fantastic novels to support comprehension and writing.

In maths, we will be covering topics such as ratio, proportion, algebra and decimals and of course we will be continuing on with our arithmetic as well.

As always, please let me know if you have any questions!

Mrs Hazeldine

Autumn 2

Well done on completing your first half term in Year 6! Lots of you have worked incredibly hard and you have settled in really well! I hope that you all have a restful and exciting half term.

When you return, there will be lots of exciting activities to look forward to. In science we will be looking at living things and classification keys. In geography our topic is, What if there were no rainforests? Brass will be continuing and PE and computing too!

Novels we will be looking at this term include Into the Jungle by Katherine Rundell and also Can we Save the Tiger? by Martin Jenkins- both of which are brilliant books to read.

If anyone is looking for books to read over half term and for Autumn 2, remember to have a look at the Books for Topics website (above) that contains some fantastic recommended reads for Year 6!

Topic homework will be linked to our rainforests topic and I have also uploaded a copy onto the class page. We had some fantastic projects for the Martin Luther King topic and I can't wait to see even more!

Autumn Term

Dear Year 6,

Firstly, a big welcome to Year 6, your final year of primary school. We will be having an extremely busy year covering many topics and completing many extra-curricular activities as well! It is my job to not only prepare you for SATs but most importantly to prepare you for high school, where you will need to demonstrate an increased amount of independence. This will ensure that your transition to high school is seamless.

PE

PE will take place on a Wednesday and consist of games activities, health and fitness activities, dance and gymnastics. Children can come in wearing their PE kits on days that they have PE.

Homework

Homework will be regular and consistent each week and there will be no variations unless told otherwise. Children should read and complete multiplication practise each night. On a Tuesday, maths, grammar and reading comprehension homework will be given out. This should be handed in on the following Monday at the latest. Reading diaries should be logged in each time you have read and signed. These will be collected in on a Thursday morning. Finally, spellings plus the activity should be completed each week. A test will be held each Friday morning linking to the corresponding week, this is when spelling booklets will be handed in to mark.

Topic homework will continue as normal, once per half term, although around SATS time we will take a break from this due to revision.

Any homework not completed will result in a break time detention so I recommend attending homework club if you are able to as this will give you a head start on homework each week. This will also get you into a good routine ready for high school.
